# PSLE Chinese Exam Format: The Three Papers, Marks and Timing

> PSLE Chinese exam format at a glance: composition 40 marks, language use and comprehension 90, oral 50, listening 20. What each part asks, timings, AL cut-offs.

更新 / Updated: 2026-11-03

## 要点 / Key points
- PSLE Chinese has three papers and 200 marks: Paper 1 composition (40 marks, 50 minutes); Paper 2 language use and comprehension (90 marks, 1 hour 40 minutes); Paper 3, which is the oral (50 marks, about 10 minutes) and listening comprehension (20 marks, about 30 minutes).
- Paper 2 has five sections. Language use (15 questions, 30 marks), the cloze passage (5, 10), Comprehension 1 (5, 10) and dialogue completion (4, 8) are multiple choice; Comprehension 2 has two passages and 11 questions worth 32 marks.
- The oral is reading a passage aloud (20 marks) and a conversation with the examiner about a short video (30 marks). Candidates get 10 minutes beforehand to read the passage and watch the video as many times as they like.
- Marks convert to an Achievement Level by percentage, so AL1 needs 180 of the 200 marks, AL2 170 and AL3 160. The format has been in use since 2017.

Most parents meet the PSLE Chinese format in pieces: a composition worry in P5, an oral date in P6, a Paper 2 that never gets finished in time. Here it is in one place, taken from SEAB's syllabus for the exam (code 0005), which has been used since 2017. What has changed since then is the textbooks and the character lists, not the paper.

## The three papers at a glance

| Paper | What it is | Marks | Share | Time |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Paper 1 Composition | One essay: a set title or a picture composition, child's choice, at least 100 characters | 40 | 20% | 50 min |
| Paper 2 Language use and comprehension | Five sections: four multiple-choice sections, then two comprehension passages | 90 | 45% | 1 h 40 min |
| Paper 3 Oral | Reading a passage aloud, then a conversation about a short video | 50 | 25% | about 10 min |
| Paper 3 Listening comprehension | Ten multiple-choice questions on recordings | 20 | 10% | about 30 min |

Two things in this table surprise parents. The oral is worth more than the composition, 50 marks against 40, and it is the part least often practised at home. And Paper 2 on its own is almost half of the grade.

## Paper 1: one composition, dictionary allowed

The child chooses either the set-title composition (命题作文) or the picture composition (看图作文) and writes at least 100 characters in 50 minutes. A dictionary approved by SEAB may be used. In recent papers the picture composition has been six pictures, the last one a question mark for the child to finish, with eight suggested words underneath.

The 100-character minimum is far below what a good script needs: model scripts run to about 550 to 650 characters. What the set titles have looked like, and how long is long enough, is in the composition guide.

## Paper 2: five sections in 100 minutes

| Section | Questions | Marks | Format | What it tests |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Language use | Q1 to Q15 | 30 | Multiple choice, four options | Pinyin, characters, words, connectives, sentences |
| Cloze passage | Q16 to Q20 | 10 | Multiple choice, four options a blank | Which word fits each of five blanks in a short story |
| Comprehension 1 | Q21 to Q25 | 10 | Multiple choice, four options | One narrative passage |
| Dialogue completion | Q26 to Q29 | 8 | Multiple choice | Four lines chosen from a bank of eight to complete a conversation |
| Comprehension 2 | Q30 to Q40 | 32 | Mostly written answers | A notice or advertisement, then a longer narrative |

Language use is the most predictable section. It covers pinyin, choosing the right character, choosing the right word, synonyms, connectives, matching the two halves of a sentence, and spotting which sentence uses a word correctly. The words tested come from a broadly finite pool, which is why frequency lists help most here.

The cloze passage looks like the word questions in language use, but the clue for each blank is often in the sentence before or after it rather than in the same sentence. It has its own guide.

Comprehension 2 is where the paper is won or lost. The first passage is a notice or advertisement with a block of practical information such as dates, times, place and fees. In recent papers it has come with three multiple-choice questions and a 4-mark task asking the child to write a short message in role, using the details from the notice. The second passage is a narrative of about five hundred characters with seven written questions: two that ask for a word from the passage, four comprehension questions, and an open question on what the child thinks. Answers are marked by points.

How to split the 100 minutes is in the Paper 2 guide. The short version: the four multiple-choice sections should take about 40 minutes, which leaves 50 for Comprehension 2 and 10 to check.

## Paper 3: the oral and the listening paper

The oral takes about ten minutes. Before it starts, the child has ten minutes to read the passage silently and watch a short video, and may reread and rewatch as often as they like in that time. Then come the two parts: reading the passage aloud, worth 20 marks, and a conversation in which the examiner talks with the child about the video, worth 30. The kinds of question the examiner asks, and how to use the preparation time, are in the oral guide.

Listening comprehension takes about thirty minutes. The child listens to recordings and answers ten multiple-choice questions, three options each. The recordings are the sort of thing a child hears in daily life: conversations, announcements, advertisements, instructions, introductions and stories. In recent papers two questions have had pictures as options, one of them a route map.

## From 200 marks to an AL

PSLE grades every subject in eight Achievement Levels by percentage. Chinese is marked out of 200, so the cut-offs in marks are double the percentages.

| AL | Percentage | Marks out of 200 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| AL1 | 90 and above | 180 and above |
| AL2 | 85 to 89 | 170 to 179 |
| AL3 | 80 to 84 | 160 to 169 |
| AL4 | 75 to 79 | 150 to 159 |
| AL5 | 65 to 74 | 130 to 149 |
| AL6 | 45 to 64 | 90 to 129 |
| AL7 | 20 to 44 | 40 to 89 |
| AL8 | Below 20 | Below 40 |

*AL bands from MOE's PSLE scoring system. The conversion to marks out of 200 is ours.*

At the top end one AL is 10 marks, the same as five two-mark multiple-choice questions. Higher Chinese is a separate subject with its own two papers and no oral or listening; it is graded D, M or P rather than an AL.

## What to do with the format

- Plan practice by the share of marks, not by the number of pages. The oral and listening together are 70 marks, 35% of the total, and they get the least practice at home.
- Paper 2's 29 multiple-choice questions in the first four sections are worth 58 marks, nearly 30% of the total, and they respond best to steady practice.
- Do a few full Paper 2s against the clock before the exam. Running out of time is the most common way children lose marks in this paper.
