# The Hanyu Pinyin Words P6 Prelims Test Most

> The pinyin words tested most across 266 top-school P6 Chinese prelim papers, and the four sound confusions they are built to catch in Singapore children.

## 要点 / Key points
- Pinyin questions in 266 prelim papers drew from a pool of only 233 words, small enough to cover completely.
- Four sound confusions account for most errors: front and back nasals, n and l, retroflex initials, and second-tone words.
- Say the word aloud and write the pinyin from memory; reading pinyin silently does not train it.

Hanyu pinyin questions look like free marks, and for children who speak Mandarin at home they usually are. For children who do not, they are a quiet drain — two or three marks lost in every paper on words the child can read perfectly well but cannot hear.

We counted the words tested in pinyin questions across 266 different P6 Chinese prelim papers from Singapore's top primary schools, 2021 to 2025. What matters here is not just which words come up, but why these words and not others.

> About the data: 266 P6 prelim papers set in-house by top primary schools, 2021–2025. Not SEAB's actual PSLE papers, and no exam text is reproduced — only counts.

## Why these words: four sounds that catch Singapore children

Paper setters do not pick pinyin words at random. They pick words containing the distinctions local children reliably blur. Look down the list and the same four patterns keep coming back.

### 1. Final -n against final -ng

使劲 is shǐ jìn, not jìng. 勤奋 is qín fèn, not fèng. 充足 is chōng zú with the -ng. This is the single most productive trap in the whole list, because in Singapore Mandarin the two finals often collapse into each other in ordinary speech. A child who has only ever learned these words by ear has no way to choose.

### 2. Initial n against l

懒惰 is lǎn duò. Children who merge n and l cannot tell it from a hypothetical nǎn. The same confusion sits behind a good number of the character-choice questions too.

### 3. Retroflex against plain sibilants

搜索 is sōu suǒ, both plain. 销售 is xiāo shòu, the second syllable retroflex. 质量 is zhì liàng. 忠诚 is zhōng chéng. Telling zh, ch and sh apart from z, c and s is the second big axis these questions test.

### 4. Tone on the second syllable

稍微 is shāo wēi, both first tone, and children often say shào. 堵塞 is dǔ sè. 倾斜 is qīng xié. Second-syllable tones are where careless marks go, because the first syllable is the one a child rehearses.

> 清蒸鱼 (qīng zhēng yú) is worth noticing: a three-syllable everyday food word, tested four times. Prelim setters like words a child has definitely eaten but may never have written.

## What actually fixes this

Reading pinyin off a list does not work, because the child reads it in the accent they already have. The correction has to come from outside their own mouth.

1. Practise in minimal pairs, not single words: jìn against jìng, lǎn against nǎn, sōu against shōu. A child who cannot hear the pair apart cannot choose between them on paper.
2. Have your child listen and choose, rather than read and recite. The question tests recognition, so practise recognition.
3. Say the word, then write the pinyin from memory including the tone mark. Tone marks skipped in practice are tone marks guessed in the exam.
4. Keep a list of only the ones they get wrong, and return to it on day 3, day 7 and day 21. There will be fewer than twenty such words, and they repeat across papers.
