P1 Chinese connectives practice
Singapore Primary 1 Chinese, connectives (关联词): choose the right connectives for a complex sentence — 因为…所以…, 虽然…但是…, 不但…而且… — testing the logical relation between the clauses. What is tested in P1 connectives
In P1 and P2 this question covers the basic pairs — 因为…所以…, 虽然…但是…, 一…就… — in short sentences where the relation between the two clauses is plain. There are few of them at this level and the point is recognising the pairs.
Common traps
- Only the first half is filled correctly and the second half is mismatched — 因为 paired with 但是.
- The two clauses run in sequence and the child reads them as cause and effect.
- One option uses a pair the child has not met, which can make it feel like the answer.
How to practise
Give each pair a sentence from your child's own life — 因为下雨，所以不能去游泳. At this age these are learnt as sentences, not as explanations of logic.
P1 connectives · worked examples
星期天，妈妈只去一个地方，（ ）去巴刹买菜，（ ）去超市买水果。
- ・一边……一边
- ・有的……有的
- ・又……又
- ✓ 要么……要么
Why: The answer is "要么……要么" (either…or). Mum goes to only one place, so it is either the market or the supermarket. "又……又" (both…and) means she goes to both. "有的……有的" (some…others) talks about different people in a group, but here there is only Mum. "一边……一边" (while) means doing two things at the same time, but she cannot be in two places at once.
今天是国庆日，还不知道晚上会不会下雨。（ ）晚上不下雨，我们全家一起去看烟花。
- ・因为

- ・后来
- ・可是
Why: The answer is "要是" (if). We do not know yet whether it will rain tonight; if it does not, we will go and watch the fireworks. "因为" (because) gives a reason, but the weather tonight is not known yet. "可是" (but) shows a contrast, which does not fit. "后来" (later) is about something that has already happened, but the night has not come yet.
我家附近的公园（ ）大（ ）干净，我很喜欢去那里玩。
- ・要么……要么
- ・一面……一面
- ✓ 又……又
- ・一边……一边
Why: The answer is "又……又" (both…and). The park is big and also clean: it has both good points at the same time. "要么……要么" (either…or) picks only one, but the park has both. "一面……一面" and "一边……一边" (while) both mean doing two actions at the same time, but big and clean are not actions, so neither fits.
Decide first whether the clauses are cause, contrast, escalation or condition; get the relation right and the words follow.
