P1 Chinese character choice practice
Singapore Primary 1 Chinese, character choice (选字填空): pick the right character for a blank from several that look or sound alike, testing accurate use of characters so that homophones and look-alikes do not creep in. Everything here follows the MOE syllabus. What is tested in P1 character choice
In P1 and P2 this question puts a blank in a sentence and asks which character belongs there. It tests homophones and look-alike characters — 在 and 再, 他 and 她, 的 and 地. The characters have all been taught; the hard part is not reading them but knowing which one this sentence wants.
Common traps
- Homophones: same sound, different meaning, so picking by ear makes every option look right.
- Look-alike characters: 木 and 本, 人 and 入 — one stroke apart.
- 他, 她 and 它 — losing track of who is being talked about.
How to practise
Read each option into the sentence and ask your child what that character means. Only pick one they can explain. A child who misses a lot of these usually knows the characters and not the meanings, so the gap to close is vocabulary, not handwriting.

爸爸在巴刹买了一个大木（ ），回家切给大家吃。

Why: The answer is "瓜" (gua, melon). Dad bought a big papaya, "木瓜" is a fruit. "果" (guo, fruit) is general, but here "大木" suggests "木瓜". "汁" (zhi, juice) is liquid, "刀" (dao, knife) is a tool, neither fits.
国庆日快到了，学校要举行庆祝活动，小乐和同学们正在（ ）爱国歌曲。

Why: The answer is "唱" (sing). The sentence says Xiao Le and classmates are singing patriotic songs. "唱" means to sing. "吃" (eat), "看" (watch), "玩" (play) are wrong.
小明（ ）天要跟家人去动物园看大象。

- ・坐
Why: The answer is "明". Tomorrow is 明天. "昨" is yesterday, "作" is homework, "坐" is to sit.
Read each candidate into the sentence and check the meaning and the pairing; only the one that fits both is right.
