Singapore Primary 1 Chinese, measure words (量词): choose the measure word that goes with a noun — 一本书, 一匹马, 一所学校, 一场比赛 — testing the settled pairings between measure words and nouns. Everything here follows the MOE syllabus. You can try one set free without signing up, and it is marked as you go — get one wrong and the same point comes back asked a different way, so your child can build the foundation on measure words. What is tested in P1 measure words

In P1 and P2 measure words are the first settled pairings in Chinese that children meet. The question asks for combinations like 一___书 and 一___鱼, drawing on the basic set: 本, 只, 条, 张, 把, 辆. The options are far apart at this level, so knowing a handful is enough.

Common traps

How to practise

Learn them in families: 条 goes with fish, rivers, roads and trousers — five or six nouns per family at a time. After answering, have your child say the whole sentence: 我有一本书.

P1 measure words · worked examples

  1. 动物园里有一( )蛇,身体又长又滑。

    • ・只
    • ・匹
    • ・头
    • ✓ 条

Why: The answer is "条". A snake's body is long and thin, and "条" is used for long, thin things. "只" is for animals in general, "头" is for large animals like elephants, and "匹" is for horses.

  2. 一( )小猫

    • ・棵
    • ✓ 只
    • ・本
    • ・条

Why: The answer is "只". For kittens, we use "只", like "一只小猫". "棵" is for trees, "条" for long things, and "本" for books.

  3. 一( )鱼

    • ・只
    • ・棵
    • ✓ 条

Why: The answer is "条". The measure word "条" is used for long thin things; fish is long and thin, so use "条". "只" is for animals, but fish usually uses "条"; "棵" is for plants.

Measure words are a matter of convention, so learn the whole phrase rather than the measure word on its own.
