P1 Chinese comprehension practice
Singapore Primary 1 Chinese, comprehension (阅读理解): read a passage and answer on it, testing understanding, inference, summary and retrieval together — the heaviest section, and the one that separates the marks. Everything here follows the MOE syllabus. You can try one set free without signing up, and it is marked as you go — get one wrong and the same point comes back asked a different way, so your child can build the foundation on comprehension. What is tested in P1 comprehension
In P1 and P2 comprehension is a passage of a few dozen characters with a handful of multiple-choice questions, testing literal understanding: who, what they did, where. There are not many items and the passages are short stories at textbook level.
Common traps
- One option repeats something the passage says, but not the thing being asked about.
- Sequence items: what happened first — a child orders it the way they would have done it.
- A why item whose answer sits in the next sentence, and the child reads only the sentence asked about.
How to practise
Read to the end before answering rather than hunting while reading. Comprehension at this age is built by reading, so a short passage each day beats a worksheet each day.

阅读短文，回答问题： 今天是欢欢的生日。小乐和小和、小安、康康一起去欢欢的家，给她庆祝生日。欢欢的妈妈准备了一个大蛋糕，蛋糕上有草莓和巧克力。大家唱了生日歌，欢欢许了一个愿望。她打开礼物，小乐送了一本故事书，小和送了一个玩具车，康康送了一盒彩色笔。欢欢很开心，说谢谢大家。后来，欢欢把蛋糕分给大家吃，每个人都吃得很开心。小乐觉得，送给别人礼物和分享快乐，比收到礼物更开心。 问题：今天是欢欢的什么日子？

Why: The answer is “生日” (birthday). The first sentence says “今天是欢欢的生日”, so today is Huanhuan's birthday. The other options “国庆日”, “考试日”, “课外活动日” are not mentioned.
阅读短文，回答问题： 今天是星期天，欢欢和小乐跟着妈妈去组屋楼下的巴刹买菜。巴刹里人很多，有卖菜的叔叔，有卖鱼的阿姨，还有卖水果的婆婆。欢欢看到地上有一个红色的钱包，她捡起来，大声问：“是谁丢了钱包？”小乐也帮忙喊：“谁的钱包掉了？”这时，一个穿蓝色衣服的阿姨匆匆走过来，说：“哎呀，是我的钱包！谢谢你，小朋友。”欢欢笑着说：“不用客气。”妈妈摸摸欢欢的头，说：“你做得对，捡到东西要还给别人。”欢欢觉得心里很开心。回到家，妈妈用买来的菜煮了香喷喷的汤，欢欢和小乐喝着汤，觉得今天的汤特别甜。 问题：欢欢在哪里捡到钱包？

Why: The answer is “在巴刹” (at the market). The passage says Huanhuan went with Mum to the market below their HDB flat to buy groceries and saw a red wallet on the floor there, so she found it at the market. “在家里” (at home) is wrong because they only went home after shopping, and the wallet was found before that. “在学校” (at school) and “在公园” (at the park) are wrong because the passage does not say Huanhuan went to these places that day.

Read through for the gist first, then take each question back to the passage; for summary questions, choose the option that covers the main point of the whole passage.

📖 Passage — refer back as you answer
今天是星期天，小乐和妈妈一起去巴刹买菜。回家的路上，小乐看到一家玩具店，里面有一个很可爱的机器人。小乐拉着妈妈的手说：“妈妈，我想要那个机器人当生日礼物。”妈妈看了看价格，说：“这个机器人很贵，我们下次再买吧。”小乐有点不开心，但还是点了点头。到了小乐生日那天，妈妈送给他一个盒子。小乐打开一看，是一个手工做的机器人，用纸盒和彩纸做的，虽然不像店里的那么漂亮，但小乐很感动。他抱着妈妈说：“谢谢妈妈，这个机器人是世界上最特别的礼物！”妈妈笑着说：“这是妈妈自己做的，你喜欢就好。”
