P2 Chinese connectives practice

Singapore Primary 2 Chinese, connectives (关联词): choose the right connectives for a complex sentence — 因为…所以…, 虽然…但是…, 不但…而且… — testing the logical relation between the clauses. Everything here follows the MOE syllabus. What is tested in P2 connectives

In P1 and P2 this question covers the basic pairs — 因为…所以…, 虽然…但是…, 一…就… — in short sentences where the relation between the two clauses is plain. There are few of them at this level and the point is recognising the pairs.

Give each pair a sentence from your child's own life — 因为下雨，所以不能去游泳. At this age these are learnt as sentences, not as explanations of logic.

P2 connectives · worked examples

  1. 客人来了，小主人（　　）请客人坐下，（　　）忙着倒水招待。

    • ✓ 一边……一边
    • ・只要……就
    • ・要是……就
    • ・只有……才

    Why: The answer is "一边……一边" (while). The guests have arrived; the young host asks them to sit down and at the same time busily pours water. "只要……就" (as long as) sets a condition, but the host is really doing both, and seating guests is not a condition for pouring water. "只有……才" (only if) states a necessary condition, which does not fit either. "要是……就" (if…then) is for a supposition, but both things are actually happening.

  2. 小和每天（　　）坐校车，（　　）坐妈妈的车上学，很少走路去学校。

    • ・只要……就
    • ・一……就
    • ・一边……一边
    • ✓ 不是……就是

    Why: The answer is "不是……就是" (either…or). Every day Xiao He takes one vehicle to school, either the school bus or Mum's car. "一边……一边" (while) means doing two things at the same time, but no one can ride in two vehicles at once. "只要……就" (as long as) sets a condition, but taking the school bus is not a condition for taking Mum's car. "一……就" (as soon as) means one thing right after another, which does not fit.

  3. 小乐想养一只小动物，（　　）龙猫，（　　）仓鼠，他还没想好养哪一种。

    • ✓ 不是……就是
    • ・先……再
    • ・只要……就
    • ・一边……一边

    Why: The answer is "不是……就是" (either…or). Xiao Le wants just one pet and has not decided which, so it will be either a chinchilla or a hamster. "一边……一边" (while) is for two actions at the same time, but these are not actions. "只要……就" (as long as) sets a condition, and there is no condition here. "先……再" (first…then) puts two things in order, but he is keeping only one pet.

Decide first whether the clauses are cause, contrast, escalation or condition; get the relation right and the words follow.
