P2 Chinese hanyu pinyin practice

Singapore Primary 2 Chinese, hanyu pinyin (拼音选择): choose the correct hanyu pinyin for a word, testing initials, finals and tones — especially z/zh, n/l, the front and back nasals, and the tone change when two third tones meet. Everything here follows the MOE syllabus. What is tested in P2 hanyu pinyin

In P1 and P2 the hanyu pinyin question asks for the whole syllable of a character from the textbook: initial, final and tone all have to be right. A word is given with four pinyin options, and only one is correct — the other three each get one thing wrong. At this level the characters are mostly common single syllables, so the work sits in paired initials like b/p, d/t and z/zh, and in the front and back nasals an/ang, en/eng.

Have your child say the word out loud before looking at the options. Pinyin at this age rests on hearing it accurately, so reading one lesson's character list aloud each day does more than doing another worksheet.

P2 hanyu pinyin · worked examples

  1. “黄瓜”的正确拼音是：

    • ・huáng guá
    • ✓ huáng guā
    • ・huán guā
    • ・huǎng guā

    Why: The answer is "huáng guā". "黄" is huáng (2nd tone); "瓜" is guā (1st tone). "huǎng guā": "黄" is given the 3rd tone instead of the 2nd tone. "huán guā": "黄" takes the -n ending uan instead of uang. "huáng guá": "瓜" is given the 2nd tone instead of the 1st tone.

  2. “游戏摊”的正确拼音是：

    • ・yóu xì tāng
    • ・yǒu xì tān
    • ・yóu xī tān
    • ✓ yóu xì tān

    Why: The answer is "yóu xì tān". "游" is yóu (2nd tone); "戏" is xì (4th tone); "摊" is tān (1st tone). "yóu xī tān": "戏" is given the 1st tone instead of the 4th tone. "yóu xì tāng": "摊" takes the -ng ending ang instead of an. "yǒu xì tān": "游" is given the 3rd tone instead of the 2nd tone.

  3. “蓄水池”的正确拼音是：

    • ✓ xù shuǐ chí
    • ・xù shuì chí
    • ・xū shuǐ chí
    • ・xù suǐ chí

    Why: The answer is "xù shuǐ chí". "蓄" is xù (4th tone); "水" is shuǐ (3rd tone); "池" is chí (2nd tone). "xù suǐ chí": "水" starts with s: s is flat, sh is curled back. "xù shuì chí": "水" is given the 4th tone instead of the 3rd tone. "xū shuǐ chí": "蓄" is given the 1st tone instead of the 4th tone.

When unsure, read the whole word aloud first and watch which final carries the tone mark.
