P2 Chinese character choice practice
Singapore Primary 2 Chinese, character choice (选字填空): pick the right character for a blank from several that look or sound alike, testing accurate use of characters so that homophones and look-alikes do not creep in. Everything here follows the MOE syllabus. You can try one set free without signing up, and it is marked as you go — get one wrong and the same point comes back asked a different way, so your child can build the foundation on telling characters apart. What is tested in P2 character choice
In P1 and P2 this question puts a blank in a sentence and asks which character belongs there. It tests homophones and look-alike characters — 在 and 再, 他 and 她, 的 and 地. The characters have all been taught; the hard part is not reading them but knowing which one this sentence wants.
Common traps
- Homophones: same sound, different meaning, so picking by ear makes every option look right.
- Look-alike characters: 木 and 本, 人 and 入 — one stroke apart.
- 他, 她 and 它 — losing track of who is being talked about.
How to practise
Read each option into the sentence and ask your child what that character means. Only pick one they can explain. A child who misses a lot of these usually knows the characters and not the meanings, so the gap to close is vocabulary, not handwriting.

夜市里有很多卖小（ ）的摊位，有爆米花、嘟嘟糕，还有棉花糖。

Why: The answer is "食". "小食" means snacks, and night markets sell food. The other options: "良" means good, cannot form "小良"; "实" means solid, cannot form "小实"; "石" means stone, cannot form "小石".
星期天，爸爸带我们去圣淘沙（ ）边玩泥沙。
- ✓ 海
- ・梅
- ・每
- ・悔
Why: The answer is "海". The sentence says go to the seaside at Sentosa to play with sand, "海" forms "海边". "每" means every, "梅" means plum, "悔" means regret, all wrong.
妈妈每天都会用喷壶（ ）花，让花儿开得更漂亮。
- ✓ 浇
- ・绕
- ・晓
- ・烧
Why: The answer is '浇' (to water). Mum uses a watering can to water the flowers, '浇' means to sprinkle water on plants. Other options: '烧' (to burn) is heating, not for flowers; '绕' (to go around) is wrong; '晓' (dawn or know) is wrong.
Read each candidate into the sentence and check the meaning and the pairing; only the one that fits both is right.
