P2 Chinese word choice practice
Singapore Primary 2 Chinese, word choice (选词填空): choose the word that best fits a sentence, testing understanding of words and how they fit the sentence — the fine differences between near-synonyms are where it gets hard. Everything here follows the MOE syllabus. You can try one set free without signing up, and it is marked as you go — get one wrong and the same point comes back asked a different way, so your child can build the foundation on using words. This page has 20 skill points and 118 questions.
What is tested in P2 word choice
In P1 and P2 this question asks for the word that best fits a sentence. The options are textbook vocabulary and sit fairly far apart in meaning — 高兴 against 难过 — so what is really being tested is whether the child understood the sentence before choosing.
Common traps
- One option looks like a word already in the sentence, and the familiar shape draws the eye.
- The sentence says what did not happen and the child misses the 不.
- Two words both read acceptably, but one is the word this lesson is teaching.
How to practise
Read the whole sentence before choosing — not up to the blank and stop. The best practice at this age is to have the child say in their own words what the sentence is about, and only then pick.

妈妈用( )烧了一壶开水,准备泡茶。
- ・水管
- ✓ 热水壶
- ・蓄水池
- ・水桶
Why: The answer is "热水壶" (kettle). We boil water in a kettle. A bucket, pipe or reservoir cannot boil water.
夜市里有很多( ),有卖吃的,也有卖玩的。
- ✓ 摊位
- ・食物
- ・灯光
- ・游戏
Why: The answer is "摊位". In a night market, there are many places that sell things, called stalls. "灯光" is wrong because lights don't sell food; "游戏" is wrong because games are not for selling; "食物" is wrong because food is sold, but here we mean the place that sells.
红( )花儿开了。
- ✓ 的
- ・地
- ・得
Why: The answer is "的". "红( )花儿" follows the pattern "adjective + 的 + noun", describing the flower as red, so "的" is used. "地" is used before a verb to describe how an action is done, but there is no verb here; "得" is used after a verb or adjective to show degree or result, which doesn't fit here either.
Look at the words either side of the blank first, then judge how strongly the sentence is pitched.
