P3 Chinese hanyu pinyin practice
Singapore Primary 3 Chinese, hanyu pinyin (拼音选择): choose the correct hanyu pinyin for a word, testing initials, finals and tones — especially z/zh, n/l, the front and back nasals, and the tone change when two third tones meet. Everything here follows the MOE syllabus. What is tested in P3 hanyu pinyin
In P3 and P4 the question moves from single characters to two-character words, and both characters have to be right at once. Characters with more than one reading and the neutral tone start appearing. The commonest pitfalls are n/l, the retroflex zh/ch/sh against the plain z/c/s, and the tone changes on 一 and 不.
Common traps
- Only one of the two characters is wrong; the child sees the first one is right and picks it.
- A character with more than one reading is marked with the wrong one — 长, 发 and 觉 change depending on the word.
- Whole syllables zhi, chi, shi and ri written as if they split into parts.
How to practise
After marking, copy out just the character that was wrong, read it three times and build one new word with it. At this level the mistakes are usually the same dozen or so characters, so a short list beats re-reading the whole character table.

“穿山甲”的正确拼音是：
- ✓ chuān shān jiǎ
- ・chuán shān jiǎ
- ・chuāng shān jiǎ
- ・cuān shān jiǎ
Why: The answer is "chuān shān jiǎ". "穿" is chuān (1st tone); "山" is shān (1st tone); "甲" is jiǎ (3rd tone). "chuāng shān jiǎ": "穿" takes the -ng ending uang instead of uan. "chuán shān jiǎ": "穿" is given the 2nd tone instead of the 1st tone. "cuān shān jiǎ": "穿" starts with c: c is flat, ch is curled back.
“白眼圈”的正确拼音是：
- ・bái yàn quān
- ・bǎi yǎn quān
- ✓ bái yǎn quān
- ・bái yǎng quān
Why: The answer is "bái yǎn quān". "白" is bái (2nd tone); "眼" is yǎn (3rd tone); "圈" is quān (1st tone). "bái yǎng quān": "眼" takes the -ng ending ang instead of an. "bái yàn quān": "眼" is given the 4th tone instead of the 3rd tone. "bǎi yǎn quān": "白" is given the 3rd tone instead of the 2nd tone.
“神仙”的正确拼音是：
- ・shěn xiān
- ・shéng xiān
- ✓ shén xiān
- ・sén xiān
Why: The answer is "shén xiān". "神" is shén (2nd tone); "仙" is xiān (1st tone). "sén xiān": "神" starts with s: s is flat, sh is curled back. "shéng xiān": "神" takes the -ng ending eng instead of en. "shěn xiān": "神" is given the 3rd tone instead of the 2nd tone.
When unsure, read the whole word aloud first and watch which final carries the tone mark.
