P3 Chinese comprehension practice

Singapore Primary 3 Chinese, comprehension (阅读理解): read a passage and answer on it, testing understanding, inference, summary and retrieval together — the heaviest section, and the one that separates the marks. Everything here follows the MOE syllabus. You can try one set free without signing up, and it is marked as you go — get one wrong and the same point comes back asked a different way, so your child can make steady progress on comprehension. What is tested in P3 comprehension

In P3 and P4 the passage grows to one or two hundred characters and the questions extend from literal retrieval to simple inference and summary — what this paragraph is mainly about, why he did that. Two skills are really being tested: catching the gist, and finding the evidence.

After reading, say in one sentence what the passage is about, then start the questions. For each answer chosen, point to the sentence that supports it; if you cannot point to it, choose again.

  1. 阅读短文，回答问题： 今天是国庆日，组屋楼下挂满了红白相间的国旗。欢欢和小乐一起到熟食中心买早餐。欢欢看到一位老奶奶颤巍巍地端着两碗热粥，她赶紧上前说：“奶奶，我帮您拿一碗吧！”老奶奶笑着说：“谢谢你，好孩子。” 到了楼下，欢欢发现老奶奶住在二楼，而她的家在六楼。她想了想，决定先把老奶奶的粥送到她家门口，再回家。小乐说：“欢欢，你真热心！”欢欢说：“奶奶端着热粥上楼不方便。” 过了几天，欢欢在巴刹遇到老奶奶。老奶奶拉着她的手说：“那天多亏你，我的粥才没洒。这是我做的咖喱角，送给你吃！”欢欢接过咖喱角，心里暖暖的。 欢欢回家后，把咖喱角和妈妈分享。妈妈说：“你帮助别人，别人也会记得你的好。”欢欢点点头，她明白了：小小的帮助，能换来大大的温暖。 问题：欢欢在熟食中心帮老奶奶做了什么？

    Why: The answer is "帮老奶奶端一碗热粥". In the passage, Huanhuan sees the old lady carrying two bowls of hot porridge and says "奶奶，我帮您拿一碗吧", so she helps carry the porridge. "帮老奶奶买早餐" is wrong because the old lady already bought breakfast. "陪老奶奶聊天" and "帮老奶奶付钱" are wrong because they are not mentioned.

  2. 阅读短文，回答问题： 今天是星期六，小乐和妈妈一起去熟食中心吃早餐。妈妈点了一碗热腾腾的鱼丸面，小乐要了一碗云吞汤。他们坐在角落的位子上，一边吃一边聊天。 突然，小乐看见一个老伯伯推着一辆手推车，车上放着几个大塑胶袋，里面装满了旧报纸和空瓶子。老伯伯的衣服有些破旧，脸上带着疲惫的笑容。他走到一个垃圾桶旁，弯腰捡起一个空水瓶，放进袋子里。 小乐问妈妈：“那个老伯伯为什么在捡垃圾？”妈妈轻声说：“他可能靠捡这些东西卖钱，赚一点生活费，日子过得不容易。” 小乐想了想，对妈妈说：“妈妈，我们可以请他吃一碗面吗？”妈妈点点头，走到摊位，多点了一碗热腾腾的鱼丸面。小乐接过妈妈递来的面，端到老伯伯面前，说：“伯伯，这碗面给您吃，还热着呢！”老伯伯愣了一下，眼眶有点红了，连声说：“谢谢你，小朋友，你真好心。” 小乐笑着跑回座位，继续喝自己的云吞汤，觉得今天的汤格外甜。妈妈摸摸小乐的头说：“你今天想到要帮老伯伯，妈妈很欣慰。”小乐笑了笑，没有说话，低头把碗里的云吞都吃完了。 问题：小乐和妈妈在哪里吃早餐？

  3. 阅读短文，回答问题： 小乐的生日快到了，妈妈带他去熟食中心吃他最喜欢的鸡饭。小乐很开心，但他心里一直想着，去年生日时，妈妈送了他一个玩具飞机，他想要今年的礼物更大更好。吃完饭后，妈妈带小乐到组屋楼下的巴刹买菜。小乐看到妈妈拿出钱包，里面只有几张钞票。妈妈买了青菜、鸡蛋和鱼，还买了小乐爱吃的草莓。小乐突然发现，妈妈的钱包空了。他想起妈妈每天早起为他准备早餐，还送他去上学，自己却很少买新衣服。小乐小声对妈妈说：“妈妈，今年的生日礼物，我只想要你陪我一起折纸飞机。”妈妈愣了一下，然后笑着抱了抱他。回到家后，小乐和妈妈用旧报纸折了好多纸飞机，还比赛看谁的飞机飞得远。小乐觉得，这是最快乐的一个生日。 问题：小乐的生日快到了，妈妈带他去哪里吃饭？

    Why: The answer is “在熟食中心” (at the hawker centre). The first sentence says “妈妈带他去熟食中心吃他最喜欢的鸡饭。” “在巴刹” is wrong: the market is where Mum went to buy groceries after the meal. “在家里” is wrong: they folded paper planes after getting home, but they ate outside. “在咖啡店” is wrong: the only places Mum took him were the hawker centre and the market.

Read through for the gist first, then take each question back to the passage; for summary questions, choose the option that covers the main point of the whole passage.

今天是国庆日，学校放假，小乐和妈妈一起到熟食中心吃早餐。熟食中心里人很多，大家有说有笑。妈妈点了一碗热腾腾的鱼片汤和两盘炒粿条。小乐坐在椅子上，等着妈妈把食物端过来。这时，一位老奶奶端着托盘走过来，托盘上有一碗汤和一杯咖啡。老奶奶走路很慢，手有点抖。突然，她的脚下一滑，汤碗里的汤洒了出来，溅到了小乐的裤子上。小乐吓了一跳，站起来看了看裤子，裤子湿了一小块。老奶奶很慌张，连忙说：“对不起，对不起，小朋友，我不是故意的！”小乐虽然觉得有点不舒服，但他看到老奶奶担心的样子，想起老师教过要尊重和体谅老人家。他笑着说：“奶奶，没关系，只是一点点，擦一擦就好了。”妈妈也走过来，帮小乐擦了擦裤子，并对老奶奶说：“阿姨，您别担心，孩子没事。您先坐下，我去帮您再叫一碗汤。”老奶奶很感动，一直说谢谢。小乐觉得心里暖暖的，比喝热汤还要暖。那天，他明白了，一个小小的体谅，可以让大家都开心。
