P4 Chinese word choice practice
Singapore Primary 4 Chinese, word choice (选词填空): choose the word that best fits a sentence, testing understanding of words and how they fit the sentence — the fine differences between near-synonyms are where it gets hard. Everything here follows the MOE syllabus. You can try one set free without signing up, and it is marked as you go — get one wrong and the same point comes back asked a different way, so your child can make steady progress on using words. This page has 21 skill points and 86 questions.
What is tested in P4 word choice
In P3 and P4 the options become near-synonyms — 发现 and 发明, 保护 and 爱护 — and the question tests fine differences in meaning and settled collocations. Sentences are usually lifted from a narrative, so there is context to lean on.
Common traps
- Near-synonyms one character apart: close in meaning, wrong in this sentence.
- Wrong part of speech — a noun dropped where a verb belongs, which sounds off but a child may not hear it.
- Approving and disapproving words swapped, like 顽强 and 顽固.
How to practise
Record near-synonyms in pairs, and give each pair two sentences — one that only takes A and one that only takes B. At this level the mistake book should be organised by pair, not by word.

地铁车厢里人很多,小安看到一位孕妇走进来,他( )站起来让座。
- ・慢慢
- ・勉强
- ✓ 连忙
- ・犹豫
Why: The answer is “连忙” (quickly). Xiao An sees a pregnant woman and immediately stands up to give his seat, showing he is happy to help. “连忙” means quickly and willingly. “慢慢” means slowly, “勉强” means reluctantly, and “犹豫” means hesitant/undecided — none of these match the willing, prompt act of giving up a seat.
弟弟今天有点发烧,妈妈带他去看医生,医生说要按时吃( )。
- ・约
- ✓ 药
- ・乐
- ・要
Why: The answer is “药” (medicine). Didi has a fever, and the doctor tells him to take his medicine on time. 药 has the grass radical. “约” is as in 约好 (to arrange), “要” is as in 想要 (to want), “乐” is as in 快乐 (happy). They sound similar but have nothing to do with medicine.
机会( )留给有准备的人。
- ✓ 往往
- ・从不
- ・立刻
- ・偶尔
Why: The answer is "往往" (usually). "往往" means usually or often. The sentence says opportunities usually are left for prepared people, which makes sense. "从不" means never, "偶尔" means occasionally, "立刻" means immediately, none fit the meaning.
Look at the words either side of the blank first, then judge how strongly the sentence is pitched.
