P4 Chinese comprehension practice
Singapore Primary 4 Chinese, comprehension (阅读理解): read a passage and answer on it, testing understanding, inference, summary and retrieval together — the heaviest section, and the one that separates the marks. Everything here follows the MOE syllabus. You can try one set free without signing up, and it is marked as you go — get one wrong and the same point comes back asked a different way, so your child can make steady progress on comprehension. What is tested in P4 comprehension
In P3 and P4 the passage grows to one or two hundred characters and the questions extend from literal retrieval to simple inference and summary — what this paragraph is mainly about, why he did that. Two skills are really being tested: catching the gist, and finding the evidence.
Common traps
- Summary items where the option is a detail from the passage rather than its main point.
- Inference items where the option overstates what the passage actually supports.
- Reference items: who is 他, what is 这.
How to practise
After reading, say in one sentence what the passage is about, then start the questions. For each answer chosen, point to the sentence that supports it; if you cannot point to it, choose again.

阅读短文，回答问题： 星期天早上，欢欢和小乐约好一起到组屋楼下的游乐场玩。欢欢带了新买的跳绳，想和小乐一起跳。可是，小乐迟到了很久。欢欢等啊等，心里有点不高兴。终于，小乐气喘吁吁地跑来了，他说：“对不起，我刚才在巴刹帮妈妈提东西，所以来晚了。”欢欢听了，气消了一半，但还是问：“你怎么不先打个电话告诉我？”小乐低下头说：“我忘了带手机。”欢欢想了想，说：“没关系，你帮妈妈是应该的。我们开始玩吧！”两个人开心地跳起了绳子。这时，欢欢的跳绳突然断了。小乐说：“别担心，我家还有一根，我去拿！”欢欢笑着说：“谢谢你，小乐。”小乐摇摇头说：“不用谢，朋友之间要互相帮忙。”那天下午，他们玩得很开心。欢欢心里想：原来，等待也是一种学习。 问题：欢欢和小乐原本约好在哪里见面？

Why: The answer is "在组屋楼下的游乐场". The first sentence says "欢欢和小乐约好一起到组屋楼下的游乐场玩", so they met there. "在巴刹" is where Xiaole helped his mother carry things, not the meeting place. "在小乐的家" and "在学校" are not mentioned in the story.
阅读短文，回答问题： 今天放学时，天空突然下起大雨。欢欢站在组屋楼下，看着雨点打在树叶上，心里很着急——她的书包里没有雨伞，妈妈要半小时后才能来接她。这时，小乐从楼上跑下来，手里拿着一把蓝色雨伞。“欢欢，这把伞借给你用吧！我上楼就到家，不用伞。”欢欢接过伞，感动地说：“谢谢你，小乐！可是，明天我怎么把伞还给你呢？”小乐笑着说：“没关系，你明天上学时放在组屋楼下的伞架上就好。我们这里有个“爱心伞”活动，谁需要伞都可以借用，用完后记得还回来就行。”欢欢听了，觉得这个主意真棒。第二天，她不仅把伞还回去，还把自己家里一把多余的伞也放到了伞架上。后来，越来越多邻居加入这个活动，伞架上常常有几把爱心伞可以借用。 问题：小乐借伞给欢欢后，建议欢欢怎么还伞？

"直接还给小乐本人" is wrong because Xiaole said to put it on the rack, not return it to him directly. "第二天带到学校还给小乐" is wrong because Xiaole said downstairs, not at school. "交给邻居阿姨" is not mentioned.
阅读短文，回答问题： 星期天早上，小乐和妈妈一起去组屋楼下的巴刹买菜。巴刹里人很多，摊贩们大声喊着：“新鲜的蔬菜！便宜又好吃！”妈妈走到一个卖菜的摊位前，挑了一些青菜和番茄。小乐看到旁边有个卖鱼的叔叔，他正在把一条大鱼放进袋子里。突然，小乐发现地上有一个红色钱包。他捡起来，打开一看，里面有好几张钞票和一张乐龄卡。小乐心想：“丢钱包的人一定很着急。”他赶紧告诉妈妈。妈妈看了看乐龄卡上的照片，说：“这好像是刚才买鱼的老奶奶。”小乐和妈妈一起去找那位老奶奶。他们走到卖鱼的摊位，老奶奶正在慌张地翻找自己的袋子。小乐把钱包递给她，说：“奶奶，这是您的钱包吗？”老奶奶一看，高兴地说：“谢谢你，小朋友！这是我买菜的钱，要是丢了就麻烦了。”她拿出十块钱要感谢小乐，小乐摇摇头说：“不用了，奶奶。妈妈教我要诚实，捡到东西要还给人。”老奶奶笑着说：“你真是个好孩子。”小乐心里觉得暖暖的，因为他做了一件对的事。 问题：小乐和妈妈去哪里买菜？

Why: The answer is "去组屋楼下的巴刹". The first sentence of the passage says "小乐和妈妈一起去组屋楼下的巴刹买菜", so that's where they went. "去熟食中心", "去咖啡店", and "去超市" are not mentioned in the passage, so they are wrong.
Read through for the gist first, then take each question back to the passage; for summary questions, choose the option that covers the main point of the whole passage.

📖 Passage — refer back as you answer
小乐是个四年级的学生，住在组屋区。每个周末，他都会跟妈妈去巴刹买菜。有一天，妈妈生病了，没法准备午餐。小乐想起妈妈平时总是为他准备饭盒，心里很感激。他决定自己动手，为妈妈做一顿简单的午餐。他翻了冰箱，找到鸡蛋和青菜，又煮了白饭。虽然煎蛋时有点焦，但他还是小心翼翼地把饭菜端到妈妈床前。妈妈看到那盘不太完美的饭菜，眼睛湿了，笑着说：“小乐长大了，懂得照顾妈妈了。”小乐说：“妈妈，你先休息，等一下我帮你把碗洗干净。”妈妈点点头，摸摸小乐的头。
