P5 Chinese functional texts practice

Singapore Primary 5 Chinese, functional texts (应用文阅读): read notices, notes, advertisements and posters and answer on them, testing retrieval and practical reading — time, place, who it is for and what is required all have to be read accurately. Everything here follows the MOE syllabus. You can try one set free without signing up, and it is marked as you go — get one wrong and the same point comes back asked a different way, so your child can push towards the PSLE on functional texts. What is tested in P5 functional texts

In P5 and P6 functional texts are a regular part of the first comprehension section: school notices, event posters, admission circulars and advertisements. It tests accurate retrieval from a formatted text — time, place, who it is for, conditions, requirements — plus one or two inference items such as who is not eligible.

Common traps

How to practise

Scan the format first — title, date, audience, body, sign-off, and where each one sits. Then take the questions one at a time and point to the line that answers each. If you cannot point to it, leave it and come back.

    Why: The answer is "参加绘画比赛" (join a drawing competition). There is no drawing competition, so it is not an activity. "观赏传统舞蹈表演" (watch traditional dance) is an activity; "购买美食如叻沙" (buy food like laksa) is from food stalls; "观看国庆烟花秀" (watch fireworks) is an activity.

  2. 阅读下面的短文，回答问题： 翰墨书法班招生海报 你想学写漂亮的毛笔字吗？快来参加翰墨书法班吧！ 日期：2026年3月14日 至 2026年4月25日（每逢星期六） 时间：上午10时 至 中午12时 地点：宏茂桥民众俱乐部三楼活动室 对象：小学五年级至六年级学生 费用：每人30元（含材料费） 报名方式：请于3月10日前，到民众俱乐部柜台报名，或致电 6543-2100 查询。 欢迎喜欢写字的同学踊跃参加！ 问题：参加这个书法班，每人需要付多少钱？

    Why: The answer is "30元" (30 dollars). The poster says "费用：每人30元（含材料费）", so joining the calligraphy class costs $30 per person. "20元", "25元", and "35元" are all amounts that do not appear on the poster.

  3. 阅读下面的短文，回答问题： 亲爱的朋友们： 康康将在下星期六（2026年5月16日）庆祝他的生日！这次生日聚会将在第12座组屋底层的活动室举行，欢迎大家一起来玩。 时间：下午3点到5点 地点：第12座组屋底层的活动室 费用：免费 聚会当天会打羽毛球和玩游戏，请大家穿运动服和舒适的鞋子过来。如果你能来，请在5月13日前告诉康康。 期待你的到来！ 康康敬上 问题：康康的生日聚会将在什么时候举行？

    Why: The answer is "2026年5月16日". The text says "康康将在下星期六（2026年5月16日）庆祝他的生日", so the party is on May 16. "2026年5月13日" is wrong, that is the deadline to reply. "下周五" is wrong, the text says next Saturday, not Friday. "下午5点后" is wrong, the party runs from 3 to 5 pm and would already be over.

Go back to the text with the question in hand; in functional texts the answer is almost always stated.
