P5 Chinese cloze practice

Singapore Primary 5 Chinese, cloze (短文填空): fill several blanks in a short passage, testing cohesion across the passage — one sentence is not enough to go on, and what comes before and after has to join up. Everything here follows the MOE syllabus. You can try one set free without signing up, and it is marked as you go — get one wrong and the same point comes back asked a different way, so your child can push towards the PSLE on cloze. This page has 11 skill points and 41 questions.

What is tested in P5 cloze

In P5 and P6 cloze is a fixed five-question, ten-mark section of Paper 2 under the board's specification: a passage of one or two hundred characters with five blanks, and options that interfere across blanks — the same word will do in two places. It tests cohesion, connectives and written-register collocation, and the blanks fall mostly on connectives, verbs and four-character phrases.

Common traps

How to practise

Read the whole passage first and mark the sentences either side of each blank. Decide whether the blank wants a connective, a verb or a describing word before reading the options. Once all five are filled, read the passage from the top — the blank that does not read smoothly is usually the wrong one.

P5 cloze · worked examples

Why: The answer is "难过 (sad)". Xiaole felt sad because he found pronunciation hard and made mistakes. "生气 (angry)" means to be angry, "无聊 (bored)" means to be bored, and "开心 (happy)" means to be happy, none of which match his feeling.

Why: The answer is "热烈". The text says classmates cheered for him warmly, meaning the applause and cheers were enthusiastic. "热情" describes people's attitude, "开心" and "激动" are feelings, they cannot describe cheering. "热烈" is often used for applause and cheers.

Why: The answer is “说不出话” (unable to get a word out). The passage opens with “原本很怕上台讲话”, so when it was his turn to share in class, nerves stopped him from speaking. “写不出字” (unable to write) is wrong because sharing in class means speaking, not writing. “睡不着觉” (unable to sleep) is wrong because sharing happens in class, not at bedtime. “吃不下饭” (unable to eat) is wrong because sharing is not at mealtime either.

Read the whole passage through first, work out what each blank needs from the context, then read it back once it is filled.
