What is tested in P6 collocations

In P5 and P6 this type appears consistently, testing verb-object pairing and idiomatic written usage. The option is often a phrase rather than a single word. The verbs tested most are 养成, 改正, 发扬 and 克服 and what they attach to.

Common traps

How to practise

Go through the collocations of the twenty-eight commonest words once, recording two that work and one that does not for each. When answering, cut the option down to verb plus object and judge that pair alone.

P6 collocations · worked examples

  1. 因为劲伟( ),所以树枝终于被他折断了。

    • ・静静地站
    • ✓ 使劲地拉
    • ・小心地放
    • ・轻轻地摸

Why: The answer is "使劲地拉" (pulled with all his strength). To break a branch you need to pull hard, so "使劲地拉" is correct. "轻轻地摸" (touched gently) is wrong, that's not enough force to break it. "静静地站" (stood quietly) is wrong, standing still doesn't do anything to the branch. "小心地放" (carefully set it down) is wrong, that's a gentle action that wouldn't break a branch.

  2. 因为时间已经很晚了,所以妈妈( )。

    • ・慢条斯理地收拾餐桌
    • ✓ 匆匆地收拾好餐桌
    • ・慢慢地喝起了热茶
    • ・悠闲地看起了电视

Why: The answer is "匆匆地收拾好餐桌" (hurriedly cleared the table). Because it was already very late, Mum needed to finish quickly. "慢条斯理地收拾餐桌" (cleared the table unhurriedly) is wrong because being late calls for hurrying, not slowness. "悠闲地看起了电视" (leisurely started watching TV) is wrong because being late is not a reason to relax. "慢慢地喝起了热茶" (slowly sipped hot tea) does not follow from being late either.

  3. 奶奶的脸上总是带着( ),让人一看就觉得很亲切。

    • ・冷淡的眼神
    • ・生气的表情
    • ・悲伤的泪水
    • ✓ 慈祥的笑容

Why: The answer is "慈祥的笑容" (a kind smile). The sentence says Grandma's look "让人一看就觉得很亲切" (makes people feel close to her at first sight), and a kind smile does exactly that. "生气的表情" (an angry look) and "悲伤的泪水" (sad tears) would not make anyone feel close to her; "冷淡的眼神" (a cold look) would not either.

Notice the settled expressions around you; pairings are mostly picked up by reading and listening.
