P6 Chinese hanyu pinyin practice
Singapore Primary 6 Chinese, hanyu pinyin (拼音选择): choose the correct hanyu pinyin for a word, testing initials, finals and tones — especially z/zh, n/l, the front and back nasals, and the tone change when two third tones meet. Everything here follows the MOE syllabus. You can try one set free without signing up, and it is marked as you go — get one wrong and the same point comes back asked a different way, so your child can push towards the PSLE on hanyu pinyin. This page has 14 skill points and 244 questions.
What is tested in P6 hanyu pinyin
In P5 and P6 the pinyin question is a fixed pair in the language-use section, going by our five-year count. The words come from high-frequency textbook vocabulary and the testing sits on front and back nasals, n/l, retroflex against plain initials, and the tone change when two third tones meet. The options are built to look alike — often four choices differing by one mark or one letter.
Common traps
- Two third tones in a row: the first is read as a second tone but still written as a third, so a child who marks what they hear gets it wrong.
- The second character of a neutral-tone word carries no tone mark, and adding one makes the answer wrong.
- One option hides two faults at once — a wrong initial on one character and a wrong tone on the other.
How to practise
At this level there is no need to drill all of pinyin. Work the words that actually come up: take twenty each from the front-and-back-nasal, n/l and retroflex groups and go through them once a week. When answering, mark the character you are unsure of first, then read the options — do not guess the word as a whole.

“趁”的正确拼音是:
- ・chèng
- ・cèn
- ・chēn
- ✓ chèn
Why: The answer is "chèn". "趁" is chèn (4th tone). "chēn": "趁" is given the 1st tone instead of the 4th tone. "cèn": "趁" starts with c: c is flat, ch is curled back. "chèng": "趁" takes the -ng ending eng instead of en.
“书籍”的正确拼音是:
- ・shū jǐ
- ✓ shū jí
- ・shú jí
- ・sū jí
Why: The answer is "shū jí". "书" is shū (1st tone); "籍" is jí (2nd tone). "sū jí": "书" starts with s: s is flat, sh is curled back. "shú jí": "书" is given the 2nd tone instead of the 1st tone. "shū jǐ": "籍" is given the 3rd tone instead of the 2nd tone.
“罩”的正确拼音是:
- ・zào
- ・zhāo
- ・zháo
- ✓ zhào
Why: The answer is "zhào". "罩" is zhào (4th tone). "zào": "罩" starts with z: z is flat, zh is curled back. "zháo": "罩" is given the 2nd tone instead of the 4th tone. "zhāo": "罩" is given the 1st tone instead of the 4th tone.
When unsure, read the whole word aloud first and watch which final carries the tone mark.
