P6 Chinese word choice practice
Singapore Primary 6 Chinese, word choice (选词填空): choose the word that best fits a sentence, testing understanding of words and how they fit the sentence — the fine differences between near-synonyms are where it gets hard. Everything here follows the MOE syllabus. You can try one set free without signing up, and it is marked as you go — get one wrong and the same point comes back asked a different way, so your child can push towards the PSLE on using words. This page has 14 skill points and 105 questions.
What is tested in P6 word choice
In P5 and P6 this question carries the largest vocabulary load of any type, with words like 努力 appearing most often of all. The testing is on distinguishing near-synonyms, written-register collocation and tone of approval. Sentences are usually expository or argumentative, so there is no story to help — only the word itself.
Common traps
- All four options are near-synonyms and only one matches the fixed collocation around the blank.
- Written and spoken words mixed together, with the one your child says every day being the wrong answer.
- Degree: 很, 非常 and 极其 — how strongly the sentence is pitched decides which one.
How to practise
Work from frequency. Take the eighty commonest words in this question type across five years of data and record one correct collocation and one common wrong one for each. When answering, circle the words either side of the blank first, try each option in, and cross out anything that does not read smoothly.

小明不小心把花瓶打碎了,他感到很( ),连忙向妈妈道歉。
- ・委屈
- ✓ 惭愧
- ・骄傲
- ・兴奋
Why: The answer is “惭愧” (ashamed). Xiao Ming broke the vase by accident and quickly apologised to Mum, so he knew he had done wrong and felt ashamed. “骄傲” (proud) and “兴奋” (excited) are happy feelings that do not follow a mistake. “委屈” means feeling wronged when you did nothing wrong, but he did break the vase himself.
奶奶的( )笑容,让小乐感到特别温暖。
- ✓ 慈祥
- ・凶狠
- ・调皮
- ・冷淡
Why: The answer is "慈祥". Grandma's smile makes people feel warm, so it is 慈祥, which means kind and gentle. "凶狠" means fierce and scary, not warm; "冷淡" means cold and distant, which would not make anyone feel warm; "调皮" means naughty and is used for children, not for grandma's smile.
放学后,小乐( )地跑回家,因为妈妈答应带他去吃海南鸡饭。
- ・慢慢
- ・轻轻
- ・悄悄
- ✓ 匆匆
Why: The answer is "匆匆". Because his mother promised to take him to eat Hainanese chicken rice, Xiao Le is happy and would run home quickly. "匆匆" means hurriedly. "慢慢" means slowly, not suitable. "轻轻" means gently, not fast. "悄悄" means quietly, not fast.
Look at the words either side of the blank first, then judge how strongly the sentence is pitched.
