P6 Chinese comprehension practice
Singapore Primary 6 Chinese, comprehension (阅读理解): read a passage and answer on it, testing understanding, inference, summary and retrieval together — the heaviest section, and the one that separates the marks. Everything here follows the MOE syllabus. You can try one set free without signing up, and it is marked as you go — get one wrong and the same point comes back asked a different way, so your child can push towards the PSLE on comprehension. What is tested in P6 comprehension
In P5 and P6 the first comprehension section is five multiple-choice questions worth ten marks under the board's specification. The passage runs three to four hundred characters and is usually narrative, with questions rising from surface retrieval through inference, summary and the meaning of a word or phrase. In our five-year count the last question or two is nearly always inference or main idea — and that is where the marks separate.
Common traps
- A detail item where one word has been altered in the option, like 常常 changed to 总是.
- An inference item offering something reasonable that the passage gives no ground for.
- A main-idea item offering something that covers only the first half of the passage.
- A meaning item asking what a word means here, with the dictionary definition offered instead.
How to practise
Read through for the gist, then take the questions back to the passage one at a time. Underline the sentence supporting each answer and check the option against it word by word — one word's difference is enough to be wary. Leave time for the last question; it is worth the most.

阅读短文，回答问题： 星期天下午，欢欢和妈妈一起搭巴士去牛车水的巴刹买菜。巴士上人很多，欢欢好不容易找到一个空位，赶紧坐下来。过了几站，一位拄着拐杖的老奶奶慢慢走上车，她东张西望，发现没有座位了，只好扶着扶手站着。欢欢心里想：“奶奶站着一定很辛苦，我应该让座给她。”可是她又有点舍不得，因为自己刚走了很多路，脚也很酸。这时，妈妈轻轻拍了拍欢欢的肩膀，小声说：“欢欢，你把位子让给奶奶吧，妈妈站在你旁边就好。”欢欢听了，立刻站起来，对老奶奶说：“奶奶，您坐我的位子吧！”老奶奶笑着摇摇头说：“不用不用，你坐着吧。”欢欢坚持说：“没关系，您年纪大，站着不方便，请坐。”老奶奶这才坐下，连声说谢谢。到了牛车水站，老奶奶起身准备下车，欢欢发现她的环保袋还放在座位上，赶紧拿起来递给她：“奶奶，您的袋子！”老奶奶接过袋子，感动地说：“小朋友，你真细心，谢谢你！”欢欢和妈妈也在这一站下车，一起走进巴刹。 问题：欢欢和妈妈搭巴士要去哪里？

Why: The answer is "去牛车水的巴刹买菜". The first sentence says "欢欢和妈妈一起搭巴士去牛车水的巴刹买菜". The other options are not mentioned in the text.
阅读短文，回答问题： 国庆日前夕，学校举办了一场“感恩与分享”的活动。文森和卡雅被分到同一组，任务是制作一份礼物送给社区里的年长者。文森原本想买现成的卡片，但卡雅建议说：“不如我们亲手做，这样更有心意。”文森犹豫了一下，答应了。 他们决定做一本小相册，里面放一些社区活动的照片，还配上文字介绍。文森负责收集照片，卡雅负责写介绍。可是文森发现卡雅写的介绍里有些错字，比如把“熟食中心”写成了“熟食中习”。文森有些生气，说：“你这样写，别人会看不懂的！”卡雅很不好意思，连忙道歉。文森冷静下来后，想起陈老师说过，要互相帮助才能做好事情。于是他主动说：“没关系，我们一起改吧。”两人花了一整个下午，终于完成了相册。 国庆日当天，他们把相册送给了一位住在组屋里的老奶奶。老奶奶翻开相册，看到熟悉的巴刹和咖啡店，眼眶红红的，笑着说：“谢谢你们，这份礼物真特别！”文森和卡雅看着老奶奶开心的样子，心里暖暖的。 问题：文森和卡雅被分到同一组后，文森一开始想怎么做礼物？

Why: The answer is "买现成的卡片". The first paragraph says "文森原本想买现成的卡片", so he initially wanted to buy a card. "自己做相册" is wrong because that was decided later. "收集社区照片" is wrong because that was part of the later work. "请陈老师帮忙" is wrong because it's not mentioned.
阅读短文，回答问题： 星期六下午，小乐和阿迪在组屋楼下的公园里踢球。小乐一脚踢得太用力，球滚进了排水沟旁的铁栅栏底下，卡在缝里，两人的手都伸不进去。阿迪想了想，说：“我们去找一根竹竿，从缝里把球推出来！”他们找来一根竹竿，小心地伸进栅栏缝里，一点一点地把球往外推。推了好几次，球终于滚了出来，两人的手上还沾了一些泥。小乐拍拍手上的泥，笑着说：“太好了，我们成功了！”阿迪也笑了，说：“下次踢球，我们要小心一点。”两人捡起球，又在公园里踢了起来。 问题：小乐的球滚到哪里，两人一开始为什么拿不出来？

Why: The answer is "the ball rolled under the iron railing by the drain and their hands couldn't reach it". The text says the ball "rolled under the iron railing by the drain and got stuck in the gap, and neither of them could get their hands in". "Rolled into the park's drain, water too deep to scoop out" is wrong — the text never mentions water in the drain. "Stuck between the bamboo pole" is wrong — the pole was a tool they found later, not where the ball got stuck. "Rolled to another block" is wrong — it happened right under their own block.
Read through for the gist first, then take each question back to the passage; for summary questions, choose the option that covers the main point of the whole passage.

📖 Passage — refer back as you answer
今天是阿迪的生日，他本来以为会像往年一样，和家人在家里吃顿简单的晚餐。放学后，他垂头丧气地走向学校大门，因为妈妈说过最近工作很忙，可能没时间庆祝。没想到，他一走出校门，就看到爸爸、妈妈和妹妹站在巴士站旁，手里拿着一个蛋糕和气球。妈妈笑着说：“生日快乐！我们想给你一个惊喜！”阿迪感动得差点哭出来。原来，妈妈特地请假半天，就是为了让阿迪开心。阿迪紧紧抱住妈妈，心里暖暖的。他明白了，真正的生日礼物不是蛋糕或气球，而是家人愿意花时间陪伴他的心意。
问题：为什么阿迪放学后“垂头丧气”？
