P2 Tingxie Failing Every Week: A Four-Day Routine

The tingxie list comes home every week, a dozen words, the child copies them three times, and fails. The first instinct is to copy five times. The next week is the same. The problem is not the number of copies. Copying trains the wrong link.
The chain tingxie actually tests
Hear the sound, recall the meaning, find the right character, write it. Copying practises only the last step. Many P2 children can write 生病 while looking at it and freeze when they hear shēng bìng, because the link from sound to character was never practised on its own.
Four days, ten minutes each
- Day one, recognise: look at the word, read it aloud, say what it means, read one example sentence. No writing.
- Day two, listen only: the parent reads the word, the child says which word it is and what it means, then writes it. Circle the misses.
- Day three, mini-test: five to eight words, not the whole list. Mark it, rewrite each miss once.
- Day four, misses only: practise only what went wrong, then one full mock tingxie.
Forty minutes in total, less than copying five times, and far more effective. Day two is the one that matters: it teaches the child to write from sound.
Look at how the character went wrong
Most P2 mistakes are homophones swapped, 在 for 再, 作 for 做. Put the pair side by side, give each a word, and ask the child to say the difference. A missing or extra stroke gets one traced copy from the card and one from memory, not ten.
A parent who does not read Chinese can still run day two: play the pinyin pronunciation from a phone and let the child write from the sound. The listening step is what counts.
