P4 Chinese Measure Words Keep Going Wrong: A Ten-Minute Fix

The dictation is full marks, the composition is fine, and the measure-word questions in Paper 2 go wrong every single time: 一张雨伞, 一个比赛. The child recognises every character. What has not formed is the reflex from the noun to its measure word.

Why the list does not work

A measure-word list runs 条, 张, 把, 场 down the page. The child learns the measure words. The exam gives the noun and asks for the measure word, the opposite direction, which the list never practised.

Practise by family

Group the nouns that share a measure word and do one family a day:

• 条: 鱼, 河, 路, 裤子, 围巾, 蛇
• 张: 纸, 桌子, 床, 照片, 嘴
• 把: 伞, 刀, 剪刀, 钥匙, 椅子
• 场: 雨, 比赛, 电影, 梦, 大火
• 阵: 风, 雨, 掌声, 笑声
• 棵, 朵, 片: 树, 花, 叶子

Five or six nouns a day, and ask the child to add two of their own. Six families a week covers what P4 papers actually test in two to three weeks.

Say the whole sentence

Choosing 场 is not the end. The child should then say 昨天下了一场大雨. A measure word only sticks once it has been used inside a sentence with its noun. It costs ten seconds and roughly doubles retention.

Write the miss down, test it tomorrow

Do not copy the wrong measure word ten times; copying trains the hand. Write three lines: the wrong pairing, the right pairing, one full sentence. Next day, test yesterday's misses before anything new.

The pairings P4 children mix up most are the ones where spoken and written usage differ, such as 一副手套 against 一双手套. The child says it correctly and writes it wrongly, so these need their own list.
