P6 Chinese Connectives Top-School Papers Test Most

This article is also available in Chinese: 中文版

Key points

  • In 266 deduplicated top-school P6 prelim papers from 2021 to 2025, the most tested connective was 尽管 at 17 times, then 虽然 at 11 and 不管 at 10, all three appearing in every one of the five years.
  • Among paired connectives, 不仅…… 而是 appeared 8 times each and 虽然……但是 7 times.
  • Most lost marks are pairing errors, such as following 尽管 with 所以, or swapping 只要 and 只有.
  • These counts come from prelim papers, not SEAB's PSLE papers, and are for ordering practice, not predicting questions.

Connectives are usually two questions in the language-use section of Paper 2. Few marks, and almost every P6 child loses some of them, always for the same reason: they know each connective and pair it wrongly in the sentence.

What the papers actually test

We counted 266 deduplicated top-school P6 prelim papers from 2021 to 2025. Among single connectives, 尽管 was tested 17 times, 虽然 11 and 不管 10, each in all five years. Among pairs, 不仅…… 6 times across all five years. The full ranked list with year-by-year distribution is in our connectives frequency article.

Practise by relation, not by list

  • Concession and contrast:
  • Addition:
  • Cause:
  • Choice:

One relation at a time, five or six pairs, and have the child say what the relation between the two halves is. In 尽管下大雨,他还是准时到了, the first half concedes and the second gives the result, so 所以 cannot follow.

The two pairs children swap most

只要……就 and 只有……才: the first is a loose condition, the second a necessary one, and papers build distractors on exactly that difference. 如果……就 and 即使……也: the first is a hypothesis, the second says the result holds whatever the condition. Take these two pairs out separately and read four contrasting sentences for each.

Ten a day, record misses as pairs

Connectives do not need volume. Ten questions a day for three weeks covers the tested groups twice. When a miss is written down, record the whole pair with its sentence, never a single connective on its own.

The frequency list orders practice; it does not predict questions. Master the every-year ones first, then work down. Not being on the list does not mean it will not be tested.

Connectives on AceLah

AceLah's connective questions run from P1 to P6, and the P6 set is grouped by knowledge point, with several sentences for each high-frequency pair. Every answer is marked on the spot and the explanation says what relation the two halves have and why the other option fails. A miss is retested with a different question on the same point on day 3, 7 and 21. Free during the trial.
