The Characters P6 Papers Make Children Choose Between

Character-choice questions are unusual: your child almost always knows the word. They can say it, use it and understand it in a sentence. What the question asks is narrower and harder — out of several characters that sound the same or look nearly identical, which one belongs in this word?

We counted the words tested this way across 266 different P6 Chinese prelim papers from Singapore's top primary schools, 2021 to 2025.

About the data: 266 P6 prelim papers set in-house by top primary schools, 2021–2025. Not SEAB's actual PSLE papers, and no exam text is reproduced — only counts.

Three kinds of trap, and they are not equally hard

1. Same sound, different meaning component

锻炼, the most-tested word on the list, is the clearest example. 炼 and 练 are both liàn. 炼 carries the fire radical and means to refine metal by heat; 练 carries the silk radical and means to practise. Physical training uses 炼. A child choosing by sound alone has a straight fifty-fifty guess, every time.

计划 works the same way: 划 (to mark out, to plan) against 画 (to draw). Both huà. The plan takes 划.

The good news is that this kind of trap is learnable, because the radical carries the meaning. Once a child knows that 炼 is about fire and 练 is about thread, the choice stops being a guess.

2. Characters that simply look alike

幸福 uses 幸 (fortunate), not 辛 (bitter, laborious). The two characters differ by a single stroke and sit next to each other in every child's mental image. Here the radical trick does not help — the only fix is having written the correct one enough times that the wrong one looks wrong.

3. Words whose reading is irregular

便宜 is read pián yi, not biàn yí. 便 is biàn almost everywhere else in the language — in 方便, in 便利 — and this word is one of very few exceptions. Words like this cannot be reasoned out. They have to be met and remembered, which is exactly why setters like them.

Why copying the word ten times does not fix it

The standard remedy for a wrong character is to write it out repeatedly. It feels productive and it mostly does not work, because after the third repetition the hand is copying and the mind has left. What the exam asks for is a choice between two similar options, and copying never presents that choice.

  1. Practise the pair, not the word. Put 炼 and 练 side by side and have your child say what each radical means before choosing. The reasoning is the thing being trained.
  2. Ask for the wrong one on purpose. 「Which one would be wrong here, and why?」 makes the difference explicit in a way that writing the right answer never does.
  3. Sort your child's mistakes into the three types above. Radical traps need meaning work, look-alikes need writing practice, irregular readings need repeated exposure. Treating all three the same wastes most of the effort.
  4. Return to each missed pair on day 3, day 7 and day 21. Character confusions come back if they are not revisited, because nothing about the wrong choice feels wrong.

Worth knowing: this question type draws from a pool of over 700 distinct words, far wider than the other types. No frequency list covers it comprehensively — use the list above to start, but the real gains come from working through your child's own mistakes.

AceLah's character questions are built from the MOE textbook lists, so the wrong options are the ones your child would actually confuse, and the explanation names the pair.
