Three Months to the PSLE Chinese Oral: A Twelve-Week Plan

Three months is enough, provided they are not spent memorising model answers. The oral tests whether a child can keep talking about a situation they have never seen. A memorised answer breaks at the first follow-up question.
What the ten minutes contain
Two parts: reading a short passage aloud, 20 marks, and a conversation with the examiner after watching a short video, 30 marks. The examiner asks follow-up questions, and that is where the marks separate. The scoring points are in our other oral article.
Month one: willing to speak, able to continue
Three sessions a week, fifteen minutes each. Reading: one passage per session, read three times, first for unknown characters, second for pauses, third for tone. Record it on a phone; the child hears the rushing and the dropped sentence endings without being told.
Conversation: one frame only. What I see, what happened, what I think, why, my own example. When the child says one sentence, ask why, then ask whether they have done it themselves, until three sentences become a paragraph.
Month two: follow-up questions, lots of them
This is the month that matters. At least two video conversations a week, two or three questions each. Ask the same follow-ups every time: why, have you experienced this, what would you do, what else could be done. A child who stops after answering needs the opinion, reason, example pattern drilled.
Month three: exam mode
One full ten-minute timed mock a week, reading and conversation together. After each, fix only two things, for example reading too fast and answers without examples. Fixing ten things at once teaches the child that they are bad at everything.
Parents who do not speak Mandarin can still run this: ask the follow-up questions in English and let the child answer in Chinese. The habit of continuing is what matters, not the parent's Chinese.
