P5 Chinese Vocabulary Cloze: Why Marks Leak and How to Stop It
This article is also available in Chinese: 中文版
Key points
- In P5 Chinese vocabulary cloze (选词填空), the child usually knows every word in the box and still picks the wrong one, because the question tests fit in context, not recognition.
- Most wrong answers come from near-synonyms: 参加 and 参观, 发现 and 发明, 突然 and 忽然. Practising them side by side fixes more than reading word lists.
- AceLah has original P5 vocabulary cloze questions organised by knowledge point, marked instantly with explanations in Chinese and English; misses are retested on day 3, 7 and 21. Free during the trial.
A parent looks at the marked paper: the word box had eight words, the child knew all eight, and still lost four marks. This is the normal shape of a vocabulary cloze problem. The question is not asking whether the child knows 参观; it is asking whether 参观 or 参加 fits a sentence about a science fair.
What the question is really testing
Vocabulary cloze in Paper 2 gives a sentence with a gap and a set of words. Two or three of the words are close in meaning, and the sentence contains one clue that rules the others out. A child who reads the whole sentence finds the clue. A child who reads up to the gap and grabs the first word that sounds right does not.
Where the marks go
- Near-synonym pairs: 参加 and 参观, 发现 and 发明, 保护 and 保持, 突然 and 忽然. The child knows both and picks by feel.
- Collocation: 举行 goes with 比赛, 举办 goes with 活动. Wrong pairings read fine to a child who has not met the fixed phrase.
- Reading only to the gap: the clue is often after the blank, in the second half of the sentence.
Practise the pairs, not the list
Put the two confusable words next to each other and give the child two sentences, one for each. Ask which sentence each word belongs in and, more importantly, what in the sentence told them. Ten pairs a week is plenty. This is contrast practice and it works because the test is a contrast.
Read the whole sentence first, every time
Make it a rule: read to the full stop before looking at the box. Then underline the one word or phrase that decides the answer. After two weeks the underlining becomes automatic and the guessing stops.
A mistake book that retests
A wrong cloze answer is worth more than a right one if it is written down as a pair: the word chosen, the word that fits, and the clue that separates them. Then it has to come back. A pair that is never retested is a pair the child will get wrong again in the exam.
Practising on AceLah
AceLah's P5 vocabulary cloze questions are original, written to the MOE syllabus and organised by knowledge point, so a child can do a set of ten on exactly this question type. Every question is marked on the spot with an explanation in Chinese and a plain-English version for parents. Distractors are built as near-synonyms on purpose, because that is what the papers do. A wrong answer is retested with a different question on the same point on day 3, day 7 and day 21, and only counts as mastered after repeated correct answers. It runs in the browser, nothing to install, and is free during the trial period.
