Should My Child Take Higher Chinese? Reading the P4 Option Letter

This article is also available in Chinese: 中文版

要点

  • Higher Chinese is a separate subject from Chinese. Many schools start Higher Chinese classes in P5 and send an option letter at the end of P4 based on results; some start in P3. A child who takes it sits both Chinese and Higher Chinese at the PSLE.
  • Higher Chinese is graded Distinction, Merit or Pass and does not count towards the PSLE Score. Its effect is in SAP school posting: students with a PSLE Score of 14 or better and a D, M or P in Higher Chinese are placed ahead of others with the same score.
  • MOE announced in September 2024 that from the 2026 Secondary 1 intake, AL1 or AL2 in PSLE Chinese, or a D or M in Higher Chinese, is enough to take Higher Chinese in secondary school; the PSLE Score no longer matters.
  • From P1 to P4, Higher Chinese uses the same reading character list as Chinese. The gap starts in P5: 1,565 characters by the end of P5 (79 more than Chinese) and 1,815 by the end of P6 (160 more).

Near the end of P4, many parents get a letter from school: your child has done well in Chinese and may take Higher Chinese next year; please reply. The reply is usually due within a week or two, and the advice online contradicts itself. Some say it adds points; others say it drags down the other subjects. Start with the rules, then look at your child.

It is a separate subject, and both are examined

Higher Chinese is not an enrichment class within Chinese. It is a second subject: the child still takes Chinese in full, and sits Higher Chinese as an extra PSLE paper set. The Higher Chinese PSLE has two papers and no oral or listening.

"Higher Chinese adds points" is out of date

Higher Chinese is graded Distinction, Merit or Pass. It is not converted to an AL and is not part of the PSLE Score, so it can neither improve nor worsen the total.

Where it matters is posting to Special Assistance Plan (SAP) schools: students with a PSLE Score of 14 or better and a D, M or P in Higher Chinese are placed ahead of students with the same score applying to the same SAP school, with D ahead of M and M ahead of P. If your child is unlikely to apply to an SAP school, this does nothing for them.

From 2026, secondary school looks at the Chinese AL

MOE announced in September 2024 that from the 2026 Secondary 1 intake, a student can take Higher Chinese in secondary school with AL1 or AL2 in PSLE Chinese, or a D or M in Higher Chinese. The overall PSLE Score is no longer part of the rule.

For a P4 parent, this means skipping Higher Chinese in primary school does not close the door. A child who holds AL1 or AL2 in PSLE Chinese can still take it in Secondary 1. A child who does take it in primary and gets a D or M moves straight on.

How many more characters?

Parents often worry that Higher Chinese means far more characters. On the MOE 2015 character lists, P1 to P4 Higher Chinese uses exactly the same reading list as Chinese; in the lower levels it only asks for more characters to be written. The reading gap starts in P5.

160 more characters to recognise does not sound like much. The real distance is in writing, nearly 300 more characters by P6, and in the question types, which are quite unlike the Chinese paper.

How the Higher Chinese paper differs

  • The Chinese Paper 2 is mostly multiple choice. In Higher Chinese Paper 2 only the 10-mark cloze is chosen, and it is 5 words out of a bank of 8, not one of four.
  • The 10-mark corrections section asks the child to write the right character or word by hand. Elimination does not help.
  • Both comprehension passages, 40 marks together, are open-ended and marked point by point. One question asks for a paragraph summary of at most 15 characters.

So rather than asking whether your child's Chinese mark is high enough, have them try a Higher Chinese paper and see where they get stuck: unfamiliar four-character words in the bank, wrong characters they cannot spot, or open answers that miss the marking points.

Before you sign the reply slip

  1. Does your child read Chinese books comfortably? The two comprehension passages come to nearly a thousand characters, and slow readers run short of time.
  2. Is your child willing to write more? Paper 1 needs at least 200 characters, and the open questions need full sentences.
  3. Is Chinese itself secure? Higher Chinese is outside the PSLE Score; Chinese is inside it. If Chinese is hovering around AL3, steadying it first is the better trade, and under the 2026 rule AL1 or AL2 in Chinese still opens Higher Chinese in secondary school.
  4. Are you aiming for an SAP school? The D, M and P priority only applies there.
  5. Whether a child can join after P5 starts, or drop it later, differs from school to school. Ask before you sign.

None of these is a mark threshold. SEAB does not publish the D, M and P cut-offs, and schools use their own criteria for the letter. The most reliable signal is how your child actually does on a Higher Chinese paper.
